by | Mar 20, 2018

Drunkards Path (curved seams) quilt block patterns are some of my favorites! Even though the block has a curved seam, it is very easy to sew together. Learn my foolproof method for fast and perfect Drunkards Path Quilt Blocks!

First, let me share a few of my Drunkards Path quilt block patterns…. you can download the patterns on my website… https://quiltingwithlori.com/patterns-and-designs/… You will see from the photos that I often use either a setting block or another fun block to put my Drunkards Path quilts together.

Then I will show you, step-by-step, how to quickly sew together the curved seam of the Drunkards Path quilt block. What is even better is that this can be done without the use of pins! That  may scare some of you… so no worries… use a pin at the beginning, the middle and at the end of the curved seam…. you will be amazed at how easy this method is!

How to Sew the Curved Seam of the Drunkards Path Quilt Block:Now, let me show you how to simply sew the curved pieces together!  In the photo below, you will see that there are 2 pieces required for the Drunkards Path block. One piece (the white piece) is shaped like a “piece of pie.”  The “piece of pie’ is sewn into the other section to create the block. You will see that in the photo below I have folded the orange piece in half and made a crisp “press” mark on the curved side.

In the photo below, you can see I have taken the white “pie section” and I’ve folded it in half and made a crisp press mark on the curved side also.

Below, you will see that the 2 pieces will be sewn together on that curve. It appears that the white section is larger than the orange section, but, It Is NOT! Once you take into account the 1/4″ seam allowances, the pieces will fit together perfectly!

Step 1: Aligning the Drunkards Path quilt block templates

Now to begin sewing the curve:  line up the white and orange pieces as shown below…. You will begin to stitch a few stitches from the top straight edge down the curve at a 1/4″ seam allowance. Only stitch a few stitches, then stop and slowly bring both sections together as you continue stitching down the 1/4″ seam allowance, matching the pressed creases on the white and orange sections.

Step 2: Sewing the Drunkards Path quilt block together

In the photo below, you can see what I explained in the previous paragraph… I begin to stitch at the top straight edge and only stitched down a few stitches to secure the beginning.

Step 3: Matching the 1/4″ seams of the 2 Drunkards Path quilt block pieces

And below, you can see where I began to pick up the two sections and continued sewing, ensuring that my seam allowance remained at 1/4″.

Step 4: Matching the center creases of the Drunkards Path quilt block

In the photo below you will see 2 small blue dashes on each fabric which indicates where my crease marks are…As I sew around the curve, I ensure that those dashes (creases) match up.

Step 5: Finishing the rest of the seam for the Drunkards Path quilt block

And below, you will see that I am coming around the curve and almost finished with the seam where the two fabrics will match up to the end of the curve.

The photo below shows the Drunkards Path curve sewn, but not yet pressed.

Here’s what the underside of the pieced block looks like…

Step 6: Pressing the seam of the Drunkards Path quilt block

For this block (and for most Drunkards Paths that I sew)… I press toward the outer section of the block. In this case, that happens to be the darker fabric.

Below is the Finished Drunkards Path block!  It was fast and easy.  Did you notice that I did NOT use any pins? When you create quilts using a larger (7″ or more) Drunkards Path templates, your quilt will go together so FAST you won’t believe it!

I would recommend that you take some time to practice sewing this pattern using some scraps. My patterns contain the paper templates you will need to use to cut out the Drunkards Path pieces. The Fr

My Fruity Melon pattern …(found on my website…see link shown at beginning of this post)… is a very FAST and FUN quilt to make because the blocks are 9″ blocks which allows you to piece an entire quilt in an afternoon! Try one of my patterns today!  Enjoy and Have fun piecing!
