This Versatile Disappearing Block can be used with any size of scrappy squares you have on hand. Choose strips of fabric to piece the diagonally sliced 4-patch block back together. Then orient each block within the rows so the strips of fabric connect to create this beautiful design.
Choose themes for your fabrics or simply make your blocks as scrappy as you dare! Below you will find the small red/white/blue wall hanging or lap quilt is
the perfect accent to the country kitchen decor. It would also be beautiful in themed fabrics for a child’s room or even in much more Modern fabrics for a minimalist decor.
Each block requires a 4-patch of squares and a strip of fabric. I chose (2) 5” lighter squares and (2) 5” darker squares per 4-patch. I also chose a darker 1.5” strip of fabric from which to sew the diagonally sliced 4-patch blocks back together! I chose 5” squares and 1.5” strips because I simply had plenty of those size squares and strips on hand already. You could use 4”, 6” or even 8” squares to make your 4-patch squares if you choose. You could also choose a wider strip of fabric…maybe a 2” strip of fabric if you are using larger squares for your 4-patch. The sky is the limit with this pattern!
USE WHAT YOU HAVE from your stash
Sample Blocks – Directions:

- For EACH block, sew a 4-patch together. (In my blocks I used 5” squares … (2) lighter and (2) darker squares.
- Nest seams or press seams open.
- Then cut the block on the diagonal.
- Cut a SOF (Strip of Fabric) at least an inch or more LONGER than the diagonal length so the strip extends beyond each end of the slice after stitching. (I used 1.5” x 14.5” SOF between the sliced portions of the block.)
- Sew the SOF between the sections of the block. Press toward the strip.
- Square up the corners of the block to remove excess fabric from the SOF.
- Place the blocks in rows, turning blocks to create the design shown above. Add borders as desired.
- For the Wall hanging pictured above, I used (4) Diagonal Disappearing Blocks plus1.5” strips (3/4 yd) for the inner border and 4” strips (1/2 yd) for the outer border. My wall quilt measures 28” square; but yours may be different depending on the size and width of squares and borders you use!
- The Lap Quilt pictured above is about 50” square. A total of (16) Disappearing Diagonal Blocks are needed for the lap quilt, plus 1.5” Dark WOF strips (approx. 1-5/8 yds) for the inner and outer borders and 4” Lighter WOF strips (approx. 5/8 Yard) for the inside borders. You can make larger quilts by simply creating more Blocks from your stash!
