Barn Quilts – Workshop and Tour in McHenry County

by | Jun 27, 2016

The picture on the left is the Barn Quilt I painted during our DeKalb County Quilter’s Guild (www.dcqg.org) Workshop on Saturday, June 24, 2016.  There were 23 gals at the workshop having a wonderful time.

The picture on the right is the beautiful Sunset Barn Quilt in Huntley, IL! Members of our Guild took a “Barn Quilt Tour” through McHenry County on Saturday. We also (of course!) stopped at as many Quilt Shops as we could to ensure our Passports for the Northern Illinois Quilt Festival (www.northernillinoisquiltfest.com) were properly stamped and also to pick up our Row by Row patterns! (www.rowbyrowexperience.com) So many fun summertime event happening in the quilt world!

Suzi Parron, co-author of Barn Quilts Across America, (www.barnquiltinfo.com) had given our Guild a very informative lecture the evening before (Thursday, June 23rd). Needless to say, we had a very excited group of ladies that arrived at the Sycamore Park District on Friday morning to begin our venture of Barn Quilt Painting!

Suzi provided completely “primed” 24″ x 24″ boards (1/4″ thick), along with the paint (exterior latex) and sponge brushes. We brought our yard sticks, pencils, painters tape and hair dryers!  The process began by choosing the quilt block we wanted to paint on our 24″ board, then measuring out that particular block on our primed board (dividing the board according to the number of squares, etc). Then, we applied painters tape to the “correct” (and that is an important word!) area of the block in order to begin painting the background colors (lightest colors first).  After each color dried (hence the blow dryers!), we were on to the next color!

Here’s an idea of how the taping and painting process went… (I became so engrossed in my work that I neglected to continue shooting pics of the process…I see these 2 were the only shots I have in my phone, but hopefully they will give you an idea of the process!)

Here are a few of the other barn quilts painted by some of the DCQG members… Hope you come visit us at our July 28, 2016 Guild meeting in Sycamore, Illinois.  Many of us will bring our finished blocks for “show and tell” that evening! Go to our website and pop off an email to us for more information!  (www.dcqg.org) You will enjoy the fun!
