Mystery Quilt Part One! Snowball Stars

by | Jul 22, 2019

Mystery quilts are always fun to make. You never know what you’re going to end up with!  But, that part of the challenge is fun too!

In my July newsletter, I kicked off my 2019 Summer/Fall Mystery Quilt Part One…. this quilt is my Snowball Stars Quilt.  It is made using my “Speedy Scrap Solutions” system. If you’ve been to that particular lecture of mine, you learned all about how I have developed some “Speedy Solutions for Cutting and Organizing Your Scrap Stash!”

My new book (with that same name!) was just delivered in June. The first Lecture I brought them to, I completely sold out! Which is good!  I had to order more so I could fill orders, plus have enough for upcoming Lectures!

The book is step-by-step instructions on my method of cutting and organizing ALL my Scrap Stash!  You know… those tubs and bag and containers of left-over scraps from quilts you’ve finished?  Those wonderful pieces of fabric that you just cannot part with?!!!  Yes, those!!

In my Lecture (and in my book!), I teach how to take tubs of wrinkled up pieces of fabric, (such as what you see in the photos below…. look at those tubs of scrap stash!!) and turn it into the next photo…which is neat, organized piles of fabrics, cut into squares ranging from 1.5″ all the way to 10″. These wonderful piles are organized by value and stored in plastic containers for your next gorgeous Scrap Quilt!

As I mentioned in the July Newsletter, we’ll be starting with the 4-patch block for this Mystery Quilt, entitled Snowball Stars. We’ll be using lots of 3 1/2″ squares, 1-1/2″ squares, and 6″ squares from your stash!  It will be a great stash-buster! You will also need sashing fabric…but we’ll get to that in the next few months!

You’ll want to go to your 3 1/2″ bin of scrap squares and pull 64 (not 32 as I stated in the Newsletter… sorry ladies…typo!)  So, grab 64 light and 64 dark 3 1/2″ squares from your stash to create a total of 32 four-patch units!  Once you have sewn the four-patches, take your 6″ square-up ruler and trim off the outer 4 edges to make an exact 6″ block!   This 6″ block will be paired with a Snowball block… but that is for next month!

Here are a couple photos of the four-patches in progress in my quilt studio…  I hope many of you join me in creating this fun Snowball Stars Scrap Quilt from your stashes!

Have fun quilting!
