Over the last 4 weeks or so, I have been busy “recycling” items that I found at a Thrift Shop to use in my granddaughter’s (Dani’s) bedroom. I am anxious to see how she likes them! She is 7 years old.
In my ‘May 2013 blog,’ entitled, “Dani’s Quilt” I posted a picture of the quilt I made for her from all the fabrics she chose out of my fabric stash. So I wanted everything to match that quilt… and used the “white, pink and lime green” color scheme as I created and recycled the furniture, valances, pillow shams and chair cushion.
The little chair is solid wood…it was very scratched and the dark wooden stain was not in the best of shape. The little mirror and the nightstand were also a dark pine stain… (Remember when the pine wood furniture with hearts was very popular back in the 80’s and 90’s? Well, that is basically what these wooden pieces were from…) However, I cleaned each piece, primed them and painted them in a white semi-gloss so they can easily be wiped down when they get dirty from “little hands” playing!
I also found wooden baskets with handles in two sizes… I made little mattresses to fit in each with a small quilt and pillow so Dani can place her dolls in the “bed baskets” which she can tote around.
I found a lime green vase, a bunch of pink tulips, a little pink owl, and a couple of glass bead adhesive flowers and dots which I used to decorate the wooden mirror and shelf unit.
The little shelf with drawer will be perfect for Dani to store her books on and colors and pencils inside the drawer. The little mirror will be used at her “dress-up” station. There are little pegs on it to hold some “dress-up” clothes and a hat.
I found a deep pink sheet which I washed (it was in excellent condition…hardly used!) and I used it to make two valances for her two windows, two pillow shams for her bed, and a cushion for her chair. I found the pom-pom trim in pink & green on sale at Joann’s and edged the valances with that.
The night stand will double as a little desk because she can slide her little chair right up to it and her feet can rest on the lower shelf of the stand. Each side of the night stand has an area to store books, etc. I also found an adorable basket filled with a china tea set, plates and little silverware… The silverware slip into the red sleeves (see photo above). I think Dani will love serving tea to her dolls. I also found two lamps (one is in photo above.)
So, all-in-all, it was only $54 for all the items (furniture, lamps, accessories, valances, pillows, and everything pictured!) Plus the paint to refinish everything. What a great way to decorate a room on a budget!
